Physician Assistant Program
Clinical Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies will play an integral role in development, execution, and evaluation of the program curriculum and administrative aspects. Duties include course design, laboratory design, instruction, data collection for accreditation, committee assignment, and community outreach. This is a full-time principal faculty position on a team of medical providers and educators working to continue the development of the program in order to achieve Accreditation-Continued status and maintain good standing with all monitoring bodies. Faculty in this position will split time between didactic course instruction and clinical education support. Time is currently anticipated at 50% to each phase of student instruction, totaling an equivalent of 6 credit hours total for each semester. Faculty in this position is also expected to coordinate with other principal didactic faculty in course development and instruction, evaluation by students, and meeting accreditation Standards.
This position reports directly to the Physician Assistant Program Director.
The primary responsibilities of this position are to manage and coordinate various aspects of didactic education to include:
- Coordinating horizontal and vertical instruction between didactic courses and assistance with facilitation of clinical instruction.
- Creating effective student assessment tools
- Clinical case development
- Clinical simulation coordination and facilitation
- Curriculum and syllabus development
- Assignments and grading, evaluation of courses
- Maintaining required documents for accreditation
- Minimum of 3 credit hours per semester of didactic instruction in addition to clinical education facilitation
- Course director for Community Health (1 credit), Behavioral Medicine (1 credit), Masters Research and Writing I (1 credit), and Masters Research and Writing II (1 credit)
- Lead faculty in development and coordination of clinical return to campus weeks (end-of-rotation assessments and professional development activities)
- Collaboration with the Clinical Education Coordinator on clinical placements and evaluations
- Additional didactic instructional support as needed
- Providing academic counseling as a faculty advisor to assigned PA students
- Serving as co-chair of the Program Admissions Committee and service to other college committees as requested
This position will work closely with all course directors to ensure synchronous instruction with the didactic courses, as well as collaborating with the Clinical Education Coordinator to ensure appropriate skills are taught to prepare students for their clinical phase of training.
This faculty position will also be required to participate in a variety of service responsibilities including:
- Providing support with student research projects
- Participating in committee appointments for program and college
- Performing community outreach on behalf of Canisius College and the program
- Organizing and participating in community service with students
- Participating in the process of selecting potential students for the program
- Participating in continuing education and professional development programs
- Contributing to the administration and evaluation of the program as assigned
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director.
The faculty member is entitled to (encouraged) up to 20% release time per week to maintain PA skills through clinical employment. Faculty in this position will also be required to provide evidence of acceptable scholarly and service activity. This may vary based on faculty academic rank and professional track but should include areas such as conducting and reporting on research, writing a teaching or laboratory manual used in this program, presenting scholarly work at a national meeting (note that simple attendance at such a meeting would not meet the criteria for acceptable scholarship), and involving graduate students in activities that develop research skills and lead to presentations and publications. - Current New York State Physician Assistant licensure and continued maintenance throughout duration of employment
- Graduate of Physician Assistant program and Master degree in Physician Assistant Studies or related field
- NCCPA certification and current registration is required and must be maintained throughout duration of employment
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience required
- Minimum of 3 years as a faculty member/instructor in a PA program or comparable experience
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability; curriculum development, teaching, and administration
- Strong local ties to the medical community
- Demonstrated record of scholarly and service activity
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Dedication to the academic priorities of Canisius College and the PA program mission
- Previous experience with ARC-PA accreditation procedures and articulation processes
- Experience in activities that focus on assessment and student learning outcomes
Compensation and Benefits:
This is a full-time, 12-month clinical faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience. Health, dental and vision insurances, life and disability insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time employees. Tuition benefits are also available for full-time employees and their qualified dependents.
