Assistant Professor, Physician Assistant Studies-Clinical Skills Coordinator

 

Position Overview:

Canisius College is in the process of developing a Physician Assistant Master’s degree program in pursuit of provisional accreditation. The Assistant Professor/Clinical Skills Coordinator will play an integral role in development of the program curriculum, course design, and community outreach. Candidates should be motivated, self-directed, and passionate about education. The person hired to the position will join our team of medical providers and educators to complete the development of the program, and will then be a primary teaching faculty member in the PA program.  This position reports directly to the Physician Assistant Program Director.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibilities of the Clinical Skills Coordinator are to manage and coordinate the technical aspects of didactic education to include classroom teaching, clinical case development, clinical simulation facilitation, curriculum and syllabus development, assignments and grading, evaluation of courses, and maintaining required documents for accreditation. Faculty in this position will serve as the coordinator of clinical skills instruction for courses including the Clinical Skills series, Physical Diagnosis series, and Clinical Medicine. This position will also work closely with the Clinical Education Coordinator to develop clinical relationships for student rotations. The skills coordinator should work very closely in conjunction with all faculty coordinators to ensure appropriate synchronization of courses, in addition to providing the minimum hours of instruction assigned.

The Clinical Skills Coordinator will also be required to participate in a variety of service responsibilities including: providing academic counseling as a faculty advisor to assigned PA students; providing support with student research projects; participating in committee appointments, participating in the process of selecting potential students for the Program, assisting in the ongoing self-study process to maintain accreditation, participating in continuing education and professional development programs, contributing to the administration and evaluation of the Program as assigned, and other duties as assigned by the Program Director. The faculty member is entitled to (encouraged) up to 20% release time per week to maintain PA skills through clinical employment.

Faculty in this position will also be required to provide evidence of acceptable scholarly activity. This may vary based on faculty academic rank and professional track (clinical vs. tenure), but should include areas such as conducting and reporting on research, writing a teaching or laboratory manual used in this program, presenting scholarly work at a national meeting (note that simple attendance at such a meeting would not meet the criteria for acceptable scholarship), and involving graduate students in activities that develop research skills and lead to presentations and publications.

Position Requirements:

  • Current New York State Physician Assistant licensure and continued maintenance throughout duration of employment
  • Graduate of Physician Assistant program and Master degree in Physician Assistant Studies or related field
  • NCCPA certification and current registration is required and must be maintained throughout duration or employment
  • Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 3 years as a faculty member in a PA program or comparable experience
  • Skills-based clinical background (emergency medicine, surgery, interventionist)
  • Experience with patient simulation, hands-on skills demonstration, and clinical skills assessment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability; curriculum development, teaching, an administration
  • Strong local ties to the medical community
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly and service activity
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Dedication to the academic priorities of Canisius College and the PA program mission
  • Previous experience with ARC-PA accreditation procedures and articulation processes
  • Experience in activities that focus on assessment and student learning outcomes

Compensation and Benefits:

This is a full-time, 12-month clinical faculty position. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience. Health, dental and vision insurances, life and disability insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time employees. Tuition benefits are also available for full-time employees and their qualified dependents.
